Why Service Charge is More Important than Basic Salary in the Maldives
In some resorts, the service charge can be very high, especially during the peak season from December to February. Some resorts even pay over 4,500 USD per staff member as a service charge. If you receive a job offer from one of the over 180 resorts in the Maldives, it’s crucial to consider the average service charge amount at that resort. This is often more significant than the basic salary and other allowances, especially for saving purposes. In the Maldives, about 20 resorts are known for paying excellent service charges to their staff. However, be cautious, as not all resorts have good practices. Unfortunately, some resorts (very few) have corrupt management that breaks Maldivian law by paying service charges in the local currency, Rufiyaa (MVR), instead of USD. This practice harms foreign staff who face unfavorable exchange rates when sending money home. Additionally, some resorts delay or entirely withhold service charge payments and even salaries for several months. Others manipulate service charge amounts, providing less than the 10% due, despite very high occupancy and sales during that month. This corruption is the dark side of some Maldives resorts.
Therefore, it is essential to be vigilant and conduct thorough research before accepting a job offer in the Maldives.
