After 48 months of sharing regular monthly updates on Maldives resort service charges since January 2021, Halamaldif.com has decided to stop publishing these updates starting from 2025. This December 2024 update is our final one. However, we will continue to publish service charge updates for hotels in Thailand, as we have a team member based there.
The decision comes because of several challenges happening in the Maldives. One of the main reasons is the new foreign exchange rules starting in January 2025. These rules will force resorts to either pay $500 USD per tourist in foreign exchange or deposit 20% of their monthly income in Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) to local bank accounts.
Because of these rules, many resorts are already facing serious problems. Some are planning to pay service charges and salaries in MVR, even for foreign staff. This goes against Maldivian labor laws, which require service charges to be paid in USD.
We cannot fully blame the resorts, as they are already struggling to manage the new rules. Unfortunately, 2025 is expected to be a very tough year for resorts and their workers, especially for mid-range resorts.
In 2024 there was many problems for some Resort Workers like late payments : Some resorts this year have not paid service charges for months, and salaries are delayed by 3–4 months. Next year may be even harder for workers and the situation will get worse (We don’t wish so).
For the past four years, Halamaldif.com has worked hard to provide accurate service charge updates. We stayed in contact with the finance and HR teams of many resorts and shared verified information, often before salaries were paid.
Another major factor in our decision is the copyright issues prevalent in the Maldives.
- Some websites and even some Youtube Channels have copied and republished our content about service charge updates without giving credit or seeking permission.
- This extends to other creative fields in the Maldives, where talented artists, musicians, and creators often face similar issues with their work being stolen or misused.
Thank You to Resort Workers !
We want to thank all resort workers and our readers for supporting Halamaldif.com. We have always tried to help by sharing valuable information.
We wish all resort workers in the Maldives the best as they face these difficult times.
