When it comes to discovering one of the most beautiful local islands in Maldives and with hundreds of islands to choose from, visiting Gulhi is something you should think about it. Planning to go to the Maldives remains a bit confusing and difficult for first time travelers because you can not visit all the major islands in Maldives on one visit. So you should choose the island that suit your goals, budget and personal preferences, and most likely Gulhi Island meets all criteria.
Medium budget travelers like me and experienced travelers have the opportunity to experience the Maldives without spending hundreds in the resort room every night, as accommodations in Gulhi mainly consist of boutique hotels and affordable guest houses.
About Gulhi Island
Gulhi is located in South Malé Atoll and a speedboat trip to Gulhi from the capital Malé takes just 30 minutes and cost only 150 MVR for Maldivians and Residents for one way, and 30 USD for tourists. Perhaps staying in a luxury island resort in the Maldives limits your connection with the locals and discover their way of life, which you will find in Gulhi. At the same time, it will give you a better opportunity to discover the local Maldivian culture. You will see how the locals eat, interact and live on a daily basis…
Gulhi Island is not very big, therefore, it is easy to get to know the island within an hour, and it takes very little effort to find shops and restaurants and you need to taste the delicious local food. The island is mainly a fishing village with friendly local people. The small island have also two amazing beaches one in the north and one in south. There is also a small sandbank island near Gulhi that you can reach it even with Catamaran, and watch many dolphins in your way, and you can take amazing pictures there. Gulhi is really great island for snorkelling and scuba diving . All water sports and excursions are available there as well. Personally i prefer Gulhi island much better than Maafushi island for many reasons and especially you will never find the crowd of Maafushi in Gulhi, you will really enjoy there and relax and it’s really peace of mind.
* Gulhi Public Beach : There are two beaches on the island, south and north. The north beach is incredibly stunning where you can lounge all day under a parasol shade, go swimming and house reef snorkeling, and have a food or drink at the beach restaurant!
*Gulhi Bikini Beach : Gulhi bikini beach is one of the famous beach in Male’ area. Fine sand, crystal clear sea that changes color during the day in all shades of blue and green. There are umbrellas and sunbeds, and many water sports facilities
Budget Transfer to Gulhi By Public Ferry
You can reach Gulhi Island also in very cheap way and save lot of money. Once your flight arrive to Velana International airport and after you collect your luggage, just head to the airport ferry jetty (just in front of airport and less than 1 minute walk from arrival), and then take ferry boat to Male’ (runs every 15 minutes). The ticket cost to Male’ is only 10 MVR (0.65 USD) , and the journey duration to Male’ is approximately 12 minutes.
The ferry will stop you in ”Hulhumale’ Ferry Terminal” in Male’. It’s right in front of Maagiri Hotel (here is the Google Maps link for the location), and from the same terminal you can take take the public ferry to Gulhi for just 22 MVR (1.40 USD).
For Public ferry there is no online booking system, at this moment, and you can pay Cash in the spot.
However please note that the journey duration will be around 75 minutes minimum (if there is no delay). Ferry runs everyday except in Friday and it’s only one time per day. The same public ferry (Line number 309) continues to Maafushi and then to Guraidhoo.
Ferry departure from Malé : 03:00 PM
Ferry dparture from Gulhi : 07:50 AM
Quick Transfer to Gulhi By Speedboat (Most Recommended)
The best way to reach Gulhi is directly by speedboat, it has more flexible timing, 3 to 4 times daily (including Friday and public holidays) and also it runs at Night on weekends especially if you land in Maldives late in the evening. The speedboat depart directly from MLE Airport and no need for you to go to Male’ and waste your time and wait until 3 PM to take the slow public ferry that will arrive almost 4:30 PM to Gulhi (Already one day lost in this case).
We recommend taking public ferry only if you have at least 7 to 8 days vacation in Maldives, but if you are coming for just 3 to 4 days (like most of tourists) we highly recommend to take the speedboat.
This scheduled Speedboat it takes 25 to 30 minutes only to reach Gulhi and it’s super fast. Even if the weather is bad, it will still go to Gulhi island. However the public ferry most of the time will get cancelled if the weather is bad.
Here is the timing between MLE Airport and Gulhi, and to book the speedboat simply reach us from our Speedboat transfers page here :
If you are in the Capital Male’ City, the speedboat location to Gulhi is located in the Jetty number 1 in front of MMA (Maldives Monetary Authority). The speedboat timing from Male’ will be 15 minutes ahead of the timing listed in the table above.
Please note that reservation in advance is required, at least 24 hours before departure, as this route is always busy. You need to reserve in advance to secure your seats.
If you’re looking for a quiet, traditional and very safe island, Gulhi is the perfect Maldives holiday destination. This peaceful paradise is one of the 9 inhabited islands in the Male’ Atoll and has the smallest population among them. According to the 2022 census, the island is home to 814 residents, with 441 males and 373 females.
The name “Gulhi” comes from a local term for a type of pottery traditionally used to store “rihakuru,” an authentic Maldivian fish paste made by slow-cooking tuna soup (garudiya).
Fishing is the main economic activity on Gulhi. There are about 8 fishing vessels specializing in yellowfin tuna fishing, each with a crew of 15-20 people. These vessels are family-owned, and the skipper is usually a member of the owning family. When these vessels go out to fish for yellowfin tuna, they often stay at sea for one to two weeks. There are also smaller boats that leave early in the morning and return to the island at dusk.
Which Currency Should You Bring to the Maldives?
One of the most frequently asked questions by tourists and our guests before arriving is, “Which currency should we bring to Gulhi Island or the Maldives?” First, it’s important to mention that as of February 2024, a Bank of Maldives ATM is now available on Gulhi Island, which is great news. You can withdraw the local currency, Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), at any time, with the ATM fee being only 100 MVR, which is quite reasonable. Additionally, there is a Bank of Maldives ATM at MLE Airport.
Secondly, both USD and MVR are widely accepted in the Maldives, especially on local islands. However, local businesses like shops, cafes, and restaurants tend to prefer USD, though you can still pay in Rufiyaa. The best suggestion is to carry a small amount of cash in Rufiyaa, especially since most restaurants and shops in Gulhi (and many other local islands) do not have POS machines, so cash payments in Rufiyaa are common.
For speedboat transfers and excursions, payment is typically expected in USD about 90% of the time (unless you paid in advance).
If you need to exchange USD to Rufiyaa, many shops offer exchange services at good rates, or you can pay directly in USD. The current exchange rate is 1 USD = 15.42 MVR.
Another important point: if you exchanged already big amount from USD to MVR and you want to exchange back the remaining amount to USD when leaving the Maldives, it is mandatory to show the receipt of your initial exchange (this is only applicable at the airport near the departure gates). However, in Male’ or Hulhumale’, you can exchange back without a receipt at various exchange shops.
To summarize, we recommend bringing a little cash in USD and withdrawing MVR cash on Gulhi Island as needed.

The Map of Gulhi, and the difference between Local Island & Resort Island
Gulhi is a smaller island, measuring 0.400 km (0.249 mi) in length and 0.225 km (0.140 mi) in width, making it more intimate than the other inhabited islands in the South Malé Atoll, such as Maafushi and Guraidhoo.
The only difference between budget local islands and expensive resort islands in the Maldives is that alcohol is not available on any local islands due to Maldivian law, as imposed by the government. However, you will enjoy the same quality of beach, the same stunning turquoise clear sea, and the same excursions and water sports at much lower prices on local islands. If you stay on a local island, believe me, you will save thousands of dollars. In addition, you will experience the true Maldivian lifestyle, local culture, delicious local food, and have the chance to interact with local people, all while enjoying the unique atmosphere and vibes of the local islands. Plus, you’ll be supporting the local community.
As an example, take a look at the photo below where you can see Anantara Resort just opposite Gulhi Island, and you’ll notice the significant difference in prices. Save your money and travel on a budget.
However and additionally, we can organize a day trip for you to one of the nearby luxury resorts, where you can enjoy a buffet lunch and a variety of drinks for full day (usually 8 hours).

Important Information for Guests Booking Daily Excursions :
Please note that most of our excursions require a minimum of 5 to 6 people to operate. Exception: The Resort Day Pass requires only 1 person. We organize these trips on a daily basis and rely on various factors, including the number of Guests on the boat on that day and the weather. Confirmation for excursions is typically given only 48 to 24 hours before the trip, once you’re already on the island. Don’t worry about anything because we are experts at arranging these excursions!
During the high season, from December to April, excursions run daily, and there are plenty of guests, so availability isn’t usually a concern. On regular days, even if there aren’t enough guests in our guesthouse, we make every effort to gather other Guests from neighboring guesthouses to ensure the trip can proceed, and the price remains the same as listed in our tour options.
Overall, the average cost of an excursion is minimum between $55 to $75 per person. You won’t need to pay in advance; payment is made on the day of the excursion. If you end up being the only participant or with just one other person, the trip will be considered a private excursion, and the price will be adjusted accordingly based on just two people on the boat.
