Maldives has welcomed over 57,000 tourists within the first 20 days of this year, 2021. According to statistics from the Maldives’ Ministry of Tourism, the sunny side of life witnessed approximately 57,599 tourist arrivals within the first three weeks of 2021.

The figures indicate, an average of 2,900 guests per day arrived in the island nation during this period. Furthermore, tourists are spending an average of 9.5 nights in the Maldives. While the country is regaining its numbers, the numbers are still a decrease of 48.7% compared to the first 20 days of 2020.

Russia is still retaining its position as the biggest tourist source market. According to the figures, Maldives recorded 13,880 tourist arrivals from Russia during the first 20 days of 2021. Meanwhile, 10,623 tourists arrived from neighbouring India.

Qatar Airways have increased flight frequency to the Maldives due to increased passenger demand, from 3 to 4 flights a day.

Ranking in the 3rd position, 5,020 tourists arrived in the Maldives from Ukraine. 3,023, 2,252, 2,242 tourist arrivals were recorded from Kazakhstan, France and Romania, respectively. The island nation witnessed 2,070 arrivals from Germany, ranking the country in 8th place among the top source markets.

1,900 tourists arrived from the United Kingdom, while 1,312 tourists arrived from the United States during the first 20 days of 2021. Switzerland ranks in 10th position with 1,072 arrivals during the period. The UK tightened its borders earlier this month, forcing all arrivals to the country to present a negative PCR test and quarantine.

2020 ended with Maldives celebrating the arrival of 500,000 tourists for the year. In addition, 100,000 tourists arrived since the reopening of borders on 15th July 2020. This is indeed a remarkable feat, considering the pandemic we are going through. Even through such unprecedented times, the tourism industry continues to remain vigilant and work towards increasing the tourist arrival numbers.

Maldives aims to welcome 1.5 million tourist arrivals in 2021. The holiday destination achieved tremendous accomplishments in 2021, reaching the goal of welcoming over 500,000 arrivals by concluding the year with 555,399 tourist arrivals. Maldives claimed the title of ‘World’s Leading Destination’ at the World Travel Award 2020 as well.
