What is Service Charge in the Maldives ?
In all Resorts in the Maldives, the prices you see on the menu or for activities do not include the tax and service charges. These extra fees can increase the total cost by as much as 27.6%, so it’s crucial to carefully check the details to know the exact amount you’ll pay.
For tourists coming to Maldives, there are three types of charges you need to be aware of: GST, Service Charge, and Green Tax.
Service Charge in Maldives is a fee that Guests have to pay by law, even though it’s not exactly a tax. You can’t choose to not pay it. The Employment Act’s sixth amendment says that service charge should be at least 10%. This rule covers everything, from where you stay to the food you eat and the things you do in that Resort. However, it doesn’t apply to businesses that only sell things, like the shops at some resorts. The law also says how the service charge money should be used :
- It has to be shared equally among all the employees regardless of their grades or levels.
- The employer can only keep up to 1% for managing it.
- They have to keep records and show them to the Tax Authority (Maldives Inland Revenue Authority).
- Service charge is not meant to replace giving tips to the staff. You can still choose to tip them if you want.
