The Maldives is set to receive its first solar-powered ferry, which is nearing completion and expected to arrive by April. The ferry, named Apollo, is being built by Navalt, an eco-friendly marine technology company from Cochin, India. This ferry is a test model and is costing approximately USD 577,039.

Apollo is designed to carry 75 passengers and will travel at a speed of 8 nautical miles per hour (around 7 knots). While this solar-powered ferry may be an exciting eco-friendly option for the Maldives, it’s important to note that it runs at a much slower pace compared to other transport options. Public ferries, like Apollo, typically run very slowly, unlike speedboats for example that can reach speeds of up to 52 knots, offering a far faster and more comfortable option for your travels. The question is why you spend a precious time on a slow-moving public ferry when you can save time and travel in style with ultra fast speedboats ?

The ferry, which will be used for passenger transport services in the Malé area, runs on two 50 kW battery packs and two 40 kW electric motors, with a 25 kW solar panel system to recharge the batteries. It also has an electric steering system that reduces maintenance needs.

The features of the Apollo Ferry

The arrival of the ferry, which was initially expected last year, was delayed. Apollo is being built to meet safety and operational standards under the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) classification.

Navalt has experience in solar ferry technology, having created India’s first solar-powered ferry eight years ago. This success led Kerala’s State Water Transport Department to convert its older ferries to solar power. The company also introduced India’s largest solar electric ferry in Kochi last year.

With Apollo’s upcoming launch, the Maldives is taking a step forward in adopting eco-friendly transport solutions. However, if you’re looking for a faster, more efficient way to get around during your short vacation in the Maldives, skip the slow public ferries and book with us for a faster, more enjoyable ride. Save your time and enjoy the Sunny Side of Life!
